Valentine Day in different view points

Hey guys so it is February the month of Valentine’s Day where supposedly love is expressed from chocolate, stuff animals, roses, and romantic nights. Unfortunately some individuals do not see it in that kind of way, in fact they are against this holiday and think Valentine’s Day is too much. The topic was a interest, so a survey was conducted. The 10 people we interviewed about the holiday Valentine’s Day had all different opinions. The question that was asked through the interview was :

1. What do you think about Valentine’s Day?

2. Are you for Valentine’s Day or anti- Valentine? why?

The answer we got from some individuals were a surprise and made some sense into why they thought of it in that way.The first person we interviewed her name is Marileys and she stated that she is for Valentine’s Day because ” Valentine’s Day is more than just a day for lovers, I believe it’s also a day for friends and amicable relationships.” In other words instead of focusing on couple they should make it seems its for other type of relationship like for example a close friendship.

Second person: Alyssa S.

Alyssa is anti-valentine because she said ” all the treats and stuff animals are unnecessary. Why do you need to spend so much money on all these treats when the only way to show love is from your heart. People does not need to spend over 40 dollars for their love one when they can just show it in a different manner.”

Third Person: Fransico A.

Fransico on the other hand went in the other direction and is for Valentine’s Day. He stated that “Valentine’s Day is a great holiday mainly because you get to show your love and the environment is positive. I mean think about it there are all these lovely couples expressing their feelings for each other without no arguments or anything. On this holiday there is no negativity once so ever unless you let it get to you.”

Fourth person: Leida S.

Leida is against Valentine’s Day she stated ” Valentine’s Day should not be a holiday because if you really love someone that should be expressed everyday not just one day. On this specific day the male and female spends a lot of money for their loves one, but what about when it is just a normal day are all the money spent to show their love for one another the same. It really isn’t fair when just one day the couples start to spend time and giving the attention to one another when it  should be shown 24/7.”

Fifth person: Leticia V.

Leticia is for Valentine’s Day because it is a day that everyone shows appreciation to one another. She said that “this is the day when someone takes another person out to eat or buy materials for that special person. They express their love by giving them what they want, which is a romantic setting and letting the other person know how much they think about them. This type of expression is beautiful and I find it so sweet how much they will do for each other.”

NBA AllStars Historic Night

Players in the NBA are constantly exposed to the media and the fans, where opinions on their play are often the main topics. Often times bias gets in the way and even the best of players can be spoken bad of, as everybody has the right to their own opinion and there can be reasons behind every argument, especially for sports. AllStar weekend is a weekend to celebrate the best players in the league and let them showcase their talent. It is a time where negativity is often left at the door, allowing the players to have a good time doing what they love doing, playing basketball. Every year the main event is the AllStar game Sunday night where the Eastern and Western conferences best and brightest go head to head, to see whose conference is the best. Often times it begins somewhat lighter and happier than an average game, but later on in the night, when it comes to the second half and especially the fourth quarter competitive spirits come out. Due to the lack of tough defense in the first half and the battle in the second half AllStar games often put up higher numbers than the average game, but this year many AllStar records were broken. Combined points in a half was broken in the first half, with 165, a number that could very well total a full length NBA game. The West came out on top, in the end scoring 163 points, tying the alltime record. Even in defeat the Easts 158 helped seal the record for most combined points in a game reaching 321. What may explain the great amount of points, would be the three point shooting exhibited by both teams, the East broke the record for most attempts with 68 but the West, in less attempts made 25 also a new record. As well as the combined totals of 48 made and 133 attempted also breaking records. While both teams managed to set their own records, the most impressive of all records was Russell Westbrooks 27 points in one quarter of play. Westbrook later finished with 41 total points, one short of the all time record 42 set by Wilt Chamberlain, who also holds the record for most points scored in a regular season game with 100. Westbrook, was pleased to take second and it earned him an AllStar MVP trophy, which many believe was what he came in aiming for. The last record and my favorite, is the first time brothers played against eachother in the AllStar game, Pau and Marc Gasol fought for the tip to begin the game, and faced eachother for the first few minutes of actions, making a very interesting first for the AllStar game. A night full of fun and records, allows for a nice break in the season, however starting this week the teams will be back in action, seeking their chance at the NBA title.

Sweetheart Savings Workshop

On February 12, 2015, the Sweetheart Savings Workshop was held at Valencia College’s East Campus in Building 3 at 1 PM. As soon as you entered the room, they had the sign-in sheet as usual, raffle tickets for prizes, and a bunch of pretty sugar cookies for the attendees to eat. The tables for the workshop was set up in a U Shape and the Financial Learning Ambassadors were the hosts of this workshop. The skillshop evaluation and a packet talking about what to do in certain financial situations as well as a budgeting sheet were placed on the tables for us to fill out and review later in the session. The Financial Learning Ambassadors started off the presentation by asking us what is saving and how many of us have a savings account? The majority of the attendees raised their hand for having a savings account, but did not answer what is saving? Saving is putting aside money for a rainy day and reducing the amount of money you spend. They continued the presentation by talking about how we can save money by having a savings account, using our Valencia College student discount in places by showing our student IDs, couponing, and budgeting. After that, the Financial Learning Ambassadors told us ways we can save on Valentine’s Day such as making DIY gift, enjoying free activities, celebrating on a different day, delivering gifts yourself, couponing, finding deals, spending the night with each other at home, and baking for your significant other. After they were done, a bank representative came and passed out her card and a budgeting packet that we could use to manage our finances. The representative also told us about how we can apply for scholarships in some specific banks and answered other questions as well. When she was done, the ticket raffle was started and two people were lucky enough to win little Valentine’s Day jars filled with various objects. The raffle was done and then in different groups, we went over the financial learning packet, which had to do with how to save money in certain situations such as Starbucks addiction, financial aid money saving, and book buyback profiting. Also, they mentioned the money tree they have and if you take a picture of him and tag him as well as their Instagram page in the pictures that you take of him, you could win a gift card in their next huge Financial Learning Ambassador event. The workshop was then concluded and overall, I have to say that this was probably one of the most fun workshops I have been to and it was very informative about how to save your money. I would definitely recommend this workshop to anyone else and remember to save as much money as you can in any situation. Also, remember to tell the people you love Happy Valentine’s Day tomorrow!

Spring is Coming

By Tiana Valentin and Mai Son

“The earth laughs in flowers.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

The season of winter is almost gone and spring is just around the corner. This is the time when the flowers begin to bloom again and grass becomes greener. Everyone with a green thumb hits the soil once again and the gardens grow with new life. We love when the season of spring starts and not just because of spring break, but because of the beautiful flowers that start to grow. The few pictures shown were taken of the flowers around Valencia’s East Campus that are beginning to blossom.

One of our favorite flowers is the sunflower which spring is the perfect time for them to start blooming. The most common sunflower is called helianthus annus which is the sunflower grown for edible oils and fruits as well as used for bird food.

The spring season is also referred to as the spring equinox and it is a time of rebirth, renewal, and resurrection. Not only are the plants and flowers coming back to life, but so are people as spring is the perfect time to start a new beginning. It is the season of renewal as one can reinvent themselves and start over. So, as spring approaches us take the time to enjoy the beauty of a single flower beginning its new life.

Improve Your Reading & Writing Skills with Claro Read Workshop

Claro Read Program
On February 5, 2015, the Improve Your Reading & Writing Skills with Claro Read Workshop was presented by Chris Cuevas on Valencia College’s East Campus. The workshop started off with him having individuals read the 13 rules on How We Treat Each Other. After all the rules were read aloud, he talked about how it is important to make a statement and to announce your presence in a room. We were presented with the warm-up of meeting one new person in the room and exchanging names, the reason why we came to the workshop, and what was our major. It was a pretty interesting experience, considering I met 3 people and after the greetings were shared, he went on to conducting the presentation for the workshop. The main topic of the workshop was a program called Claro Read. Claro Read is a program that is able to improve your reading, writing, and language skills by reading things to you so you are able to memorize what you have to learn. The program reads material aloud to you in various voices and can help you study in a more efficient way. You are able to save the voiced material of what it read to you so you can have it on your computer as a video, a music file, or even a file on iTunes so you can listen to your study material on the go or whenever. The program has many options such as text color changes, highlighting colors for words, reading various calculator inputs, making outlines/brain map charts for you, and changing the screen colors as well. You can have the voice read very fast or very slow in a variety of language as well. He demonstrated the program’s abilities and it really showed me how the world of technology has evolved. I would definitely recommend it for any student that wants to be successful in their education life and the other great thing about it is that it is free to Valencia College students. The only requirement is to meet with Mr. Cuevas to discuss on how to get it on your computer, but I would say Claro Read is definitely worth having for a variety of things.

American Sniper: Movie Review

By Tiana Valentin and Mai Son

On January 16th, 2015, the film American Sniper was released into theaters. The film is based off of the life of Chris Kyle and the book which he published in January of 2012. American Sniper is about Chris Kyle, the most lethal sniper in U.S. history. The movie begins with Kyle as a rodeo rider living in Texas, but he soon realizes he needs something different in his life. Kyle joins the U.S. SEALS to become a sniper and before he begins his first tour in Iraq he marries Taya Renae. Kyle becomes “the legend” while in Iraq having 160 confirmed kills and serving four tours. Majority of the movie is about his time in Iraq and how he became America’s most lethal sniper and the hardships he had to encounter trying to revert back to his life in the states. Many soldiers who have returned home from Iraq have developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder because they can not cope with traumatic experiences they saw during war. Kyle could not leave the war behind him which is why he would continuously return to Iraq as it was easier for him then being home with his wife and two children and living a normal life like the war was not going on.

While in Iraq, Kyle was almost killed during a raid as him and his troops were surrounded by the enemy and a sand storm hit them. After that experience he did not return to war and he went back home to his family where they moved back to Texas. In order to cope with his struggles of his war experiences he would volunteer with war veterans like himself. Kyle changed his life for the better and was headed down a good path. On February 2nd, 2013, Chris Kyle was shot and killed at a shooting range by a veteran whom Kyle was trying to help. Kyle was seen as a hero by thousands of Americans and the film touched the hearts of many people especially those affiliated with the military.

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Sequel to be Released in July 2015

Originally, To Kill a Mockingbird was released in the 1960s by author, Harper Lee, making it her first book. On February 3, 2015, Harper Lee announced that there will be a sequel for the book in July 2015 called Go Set a Watchman. The time gap between To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman will be about a 55 year difference, which is reported to be one of the largest literary writer gaps in history. The release of this sequel information has lead to excitement and controversy across the world of literary lovers. Go Set a Watchman will take place in the 1950s and will be the unrevised copy of her final manuscript, which was found decades later attached to the manuscript of To Kill a Mockingbird. The irony of this is that Go Set a Watchman was the first book she wrote and will feature the same characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, which was published before and is commonly used in school English classes. To Kill a Mockingbird took place in the South during the times of the Jim Crow laws and it shows plenty of racism in the story of Atticus Finch, a lawyer of Maycomb, Alabama, defending a black man in a rape trial and dealing with his kids alone. Go Set a Watchman takes places 20 years later when Atticus’s daughter, Scout(Jean Louise Finch), goes back to Maycomb after living in New York to deal with her past, her family, and the continuing racial tension of her hometown. To Kill a Mockingbird was written after Go Set a Watchman as a flashback to Scout’s childhood. It will be a 304 page book and will have an ebook copy as well as more than a million copies to be published, according to 88 year old author, Harper Lee and her publishers. It has already one of the most pre-ordered books on the Barnes & Noble website and I am looking forward to it because I remember reading the book in high school and I would like to see how Harper Lee portrays the story of Scout later on in her life.

New Year New Me

By:Colby Birkett

As January is winding down and coming to a close so are many of the resolutions set at just the beginning of the month. Why is that? Why are so many coveted goals and plans left unfinished? When just weeks before they were the stress and motivation for people who declared they would follow through with these goals. it’s simple really, new years resolutions are just goals set with fancy terminology and ridiculous reasoning. Most goals are set because there is a motivation to want to complete them, for example people often decide to go to the gym to gain self-confidence and feel better about themselves.

On a New Year however many people set resolutions because others will ask what it is, or because they found something they haven’t got around to or just kept failing at. So why do our resolutions often fail? They are goals with little behind them and are often set for achievement over a long period of time (within the next year). We struggle completing long term goals as we as humans have gotten very accustomed to being quickly or instantly rewarded for our hard work. We value our time and effort alot and we only do what we feel we are getting something out of. So to those of you who may be hanging on to your resolutions or are looking to improve yourselves, focus on setting benchmark goals and try to work with one goal at a time. For example I set a goal to write this article tonight, but i wasn’t really motivated id rather drink a cup of tea and watch netflix, so i decided i would only do that once my article was complete, telling myself that gave me an instant reward for my time and effort something we can’t always get. So what if you can’t reward yourself at the moment? Well that is good because constantly rewarding yourself is a slippery slope it is only to be done when needed and not to be used all of the time, but no worries there are other easy motivators for working hard. One is envisioning yourself when you have completed your goal, envisioning the long term reward at the end, this is a simple one most people use with work, envisioning the paycheck at the end of the week. Another great trick is to let yourself feel good about small advances, back to the gym example many people get discouraged when they weigh themselves every day and hardly lose, but if you weigh yourself once a week you can see you lost two pounds and feel really good about it all. That is a type of saving up your reward so to speak. However, another way to motivate yourself can come out of that, sticking with the same example, the next time you really want to skip the gym or hop on the scale early you can remember how good it felt to wait and get your good results, this can motivate you and even make you feel accomplished all over again. Now what if most of these techniques still can get you motivated? Reflect on what you are doing and how bad you really want it, if there is no passion for it within you, maybe it is better to focus your energy on something more meaningful. Keep setting goals and keep busting through, this will give you confidence and make you feel like you are on a roll, allowing you to set tougher goals and feel stronger about completing them. Stay motivated, stay confident, and stay goals oriented, and next time you think about setting a new years resolution think of all the steps you are going to take to get there, those goals will make you reach the largest one and make you a success.
