The Book of Life Movie
On October 17, 2014, The Book of Life was released in theaters. The Book of Life is an animated movie that is more related to Mexico’s Day of the Dead on November 2nd. On opening weekend, it received $17,005,218 in the box office and was rated 7.6 stars out of 10 on IMDb. This movie falls under the genres of animation, adventure, comedy, family, fantasy, and romance and has many famous actors such as Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana, Ice Cube, Christina Applegate, Danny Trejo, and many others.
The Book of Life is about a tour guide named Mary Beth, telling a group of kids stories, legends, and myths of Mexican folklore which leads to the story of the town of San Angel in The Book of Life. The story starts off with introducing the three friends, Maria, Manolo, and Joaquin when they were little kids. Manolo and Joaquin are in love with Maria and go on all these crazy adventures with her. The spirit ruler of the Land of the Remembered, La Muerte, and the spirit ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, Xibalba, make a bet on who will marry Maria in the future, Manolo or Joaquin. If Xibalba wins, he switches lands with La Muerte and if La Muerte wins, Xibalba is forbidden from interfering in mortal affairs. After observing the boys closely on San Angel’s Day of the Dead, La Muerte bets on Manolo and Xibalba bets on Joaquin.
After an unfortunate adventure of rescuing pigs, Maria is sent away by her father to a private boarding school in Spain to learn how to behave and on the farewell journey, Manolo gives her a pig and she gives him a guitar that says “Always play from the heart” on it. Even though Manolo wants to play guitar for a living, he is trained by his father to be the next greatest bullfighter in the Sanchez family life. Joaquin is trained to live in his father’s footsteps of becoming the town hero. They are trained for years and years before Maria comes back.
Maria comes back on the day of Manolo’s first live performance bullfight and both Joaquin and Manolo are excited to see her. Manolo makes a great performance for Maria in the bullfight, but he is unable to kill the bull and ultimately, he is disowned by his father. They have a huge feast thrown for Maria and Joaquin proposes to Maria during the feast, but she doesn’t respond, due to the encouragement of her father and her interest in Manolo. Manolo tries to sweep her off her feet and Joaquin thinks about himself more than her. Maria’s father tries to convince Maria to marry Joaquin so he can continue to save the town from bandits, but she goes off to see Manolo on a little separate island. Manolo serenades her and proposes to her, too, but she is bitten by a snake from Xibalba to make Manolo lose the wager and to make Maria lose consciousness. The town is disappointed by the news, making the assumption that she is dead so Manolo sacrifices himself to Xibalba and dying to have Maria back. He doesn’t realize the deal he made until he goes into the Land of the Remembered and sees that Maria is still alive on Earth. Xibalba ultimately believes he won the bet until La Muerte finds out about his cheating and Manolo has to find a way back to Earth to be with Maria.
All I will say is this: go watch The Book of Life to find out the true ending of this romantic tale! Overall, I loved this movie very much and I found everything including the colors, the story, the animation, the music, and more to make this a very enticing movie to watch! The Book of Life is a very funny and romantic movie to watch for anyone, whether you are a little kid or an adult that loves any genre of movie in general.
